Fantastic Text
Latessa and Allen have provided an excellent resource for students of Criminal Justice, and professors alike. This text is concise, very readable, and extremely current, while offering a depth and breadth of information regarding the role and importance of Community Corrections throughout history and today. Many thanks to both authors!

Corrections in the Community
I am a 3rd year Criminal Justice student and I must say that this is probably the best text that I have ever had. It is interesting, easy to read and very scholastic. It is actually a pleasure to read this book.

Very readable, current textbook
As an adjunct professor at the University of Central Florida, I use this text to supplement my Community-Based Corrections class (it was too late in the semester to order it for the main text). It is very readable, written in a good continuim of information, and includes review questions, key terms, and recommended readings. The instructor's guide includes a test bank disk and an overview of each chapter. Student objectives, instructor's aides, and test questions (essay, short-answer, multiple-choice, and true/false) are included (with correct answer, of course!) My students generate a lot of floor discussion with the topics in this book.

Creation and Blessing: A Guide to the Study and Exposition of Genesis
Published in Hardcover by Baker Book House (March, 1988)
Author: Allen P. Ross
Average review score:

Best Genesis Commentary I've Read
We used this commentary when I was studying Hebrew in seminary. I found it not only to be the best commentary on Genesis, but also the most enjoyable one to read out of all of my OT commentaries. I like the book because it is very readable, it sheds light on the nuances of the original language, and also has very practical applications. I've forgotten a lot of my Hebrew, but I haven't forgotten this book!

An exceptional study of the book of beginnings.
I purchased this book for a second year Bible college class on the book of Genesis. Dr. Ross' book was very helpful to me as an aspiring pastor because not only was he helpful in the technical aspects of the book of Genesis but he was also helpful in illustrating how the book of Genesis could be applied in our society today. This book is a must for any Old Testament scholar and for any preacher or teacher of God's Word.

A very readable and complete exposition of Genesis.
Dr. Ross is one of the most respected Old Testament scholars in America today. This book brings new understanding to the foundational book of the Bible. Dr. Ross is extremely faithful to the scripture and writes in a way that makes even the most difficult passages easy to understand for all. Dr. Ross currently is O.T. Professor at Trinity Episcopal School of Ministry. He has two doctorate degrees from Cambridge University. This book is used as the text book in a number of seminaries around the world.

The Daughters of a Mother

Could not put it down
I had the pleasure of meeting the author of this book & I was telling him I will probably have this read in one night. I was absolutely right. The first page of this book captured me and I was unable to put it down. Each chapter I kept on reading wondering what was going to happen next. I love the fact that he focused on the bond between the sisters, teenage pregnancy and homosexuality. Instead of sugar coating everything and making it sound like some sort of fairy tale, Mr. Allen gave us a nice bittersweet novel. And THAT is what made this such an excellent read!

THE DAUGHTERS OF A MOTHER
BOICE TERREL ALLEN'S NOVEL IS A VERY EXCEPTIONAL NOVEL. I'VE BEEN READING NOVELS FOR 30 YEARS AND IF THE FIRST PAGE DON'T GRAB ME I CAN'T READ THE NOVEL ANY FURTHER. THE DAUGHTERS OF A MOTHER IS NOT THE CASE. FROM BEGINNING TO END I ENJOYED THIS NOVEL. IT'S THE KIND OF BOOK YOU CAN'T PUT DOWN. I FINISHED THIS NOVEL IN A DAY AND HATED WHEN I FINISHED, I KEPT WANTING MORE. BOICE TERREL ALLEN CAPTURES EVERYTHING THAT COULD HAPPEN IN A YOUNG PERSON'S LIFE. HIS STYLE OF WRITING MAKES YOU FEEL AS THOUGH YOUR A PART OF THE STORY. I LOOK FORWARD IN READING OTHER BOOKS BY BOICE TERREL ALLEN.

Allen has created an absolute winner.
I must say that "The daughters of a Mother" is one of the best short novels I have read in years. I happened to stumble accross it a few days ago. The cover struck me as amazing. But so much more awaits for the reader inside. boice-Terrel Allen has somehow summed up so many of the problems of today's young adults. His scope is broad covering such issues as: family roles, teen pregnacy, homosexuality, and most of all...the love of two sisters. Even though this is a small novel covering many issues, Allen is able to give depth and insight not only to the main characters but also the challenges they face growing up. And finally a word of caution to the anyone that has the opportunity to read this novel: it is far from superficial. Be prepared to think quite a bit as your fingers turn each page with a mind of their own.

Decking the Halls: The Folklore and Traditions of Christmas Plants
Published in Hardcover by Willow Creek Press (September, 2000)
Author: Linda Allen
Average review score:

Provides a fine reflection on folklore and traditions
Decking the Halls provides a fine reflection on the folklore and traditions of Christmas plants, considering the legends and symbolism which surrounds them and the seasonal customs which have accompanied popular Christmas blooming plants. Decking the Halls could have been featured in our gardening column, but is recommended here for its historical and social reflection, crossing different cultures in its analysis of plant meaning.

Decking the Halls: The Folklore and Traditions of Christmas
I feel that Mrs. Allen has captured the essisance and eligance that is Christmas. Through her time and effort, and excellent book has been produced that should survive for generations to come. Through the information found in this wonderful publication, readers will find a deeper meaning to the plants and traditions associated with the season. Good Reading to All.

A great addition to the Christmas season
Decking the Hall successfully takes on the most important task of enlightening us about the plants mankind has chosen to celebrate his favorite holiday of Christmas.

Did you know that the color green symbolizes eternal life or that many of our Christmas traditions involving plants come from the Ancient cultures of Druids, Celt, Norse, and Roman? The first chapter tells the basics of the Christmas plants heritage and where our traditions first started. In the second chapter, we learn the history at the mistletoe and how it became Oklahoma's state flower. In the next chapter, the story of the Christmas tree, how it was used in ancient traditions. The fourth chapter explains the circle of life, or as we know it, the wreath and what it symbolizes. The next two chapters tell us about the European tradition of the Yule log and the holy holly. I found it interesting that again the Christian church condemned a plant because it was used in pagan rituals, only to later lift the ban. This little package with a big story to tell also mentions the poinsettia and it's heritage from Mexico, the rosemary and how it was used in the middle ages, the Christmas Rose, which isn't really a rose at all, cinnamon, which was native to India, Peppermint, the universal symbol of Christmas, and of course the cranberry and it's functional history.

What a delightful read! I came away filled with the knowledge of ancient cultures, history, and beliefs that surround the plants I put out every Christmas. Some of the Information Linda Allen provides I am aware of, but the largest percentage I was not. I will not only look at this season's plant differently, I will also share their stories with those who will listen and tell them where I learned it all.

Dinosaurs in Art! Make your own sculptures!
There's no better way to enjoy Paleoart than through making your own paleoart, and in "Dinosaur Sculpting" the authors rely on their own experiences in providing the inspirational means for readers to make their own dinosaur sculptures. Using inspirational tones & an amazing array of wonderful in-progress photos, they demystify & simplify what might otherwise appear to be very difficult and challenging tasks. Very nice presentation throughout & my hardy compliments to the authors!

Best & first book of its kind!
Dinosaur Sculpting is the first & best book ever written providing firsthand, user-friendly tips on how to sculpt your own original dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals using Super Sculpey. It is lavishly presented with numerous photos, including many in-progress shots so readers can readily comprehend what they need to see in order to make their own original sculptures. All the steps from armature-making through body detail work are covered, and the book's tone is both inspiring and enjoyable. Excellent book for anyone getting started in sculpting.
This was one of the best books I have ever purchased off of Amazon.com. I've always wanted to sculpt, esspecially dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals. Doctor Danger Forward: A World War II Memoir of a Combat Medical Aidman, First Infantry Division
Published in Paperback by McFarland & Company (15 December, 1999)
Author: Allen N. Towne
Average review score:

Understanding my father
My father served with the author and is in a few of the pictures and anecdotes. I have a greater understanding and appreciation of what war is all about. Dad did not want to talk about what he saw and experienced when he was alive. He shared his scrapbooks on a few occasions, dodging some questions that were too close to him.

When Dad died, I sent a letter to "the outfit" as he referred to the men with whom he served. I had some wonderful letters and calls from men who had shared a part of his life that I never knew. But, I now know better from reading this book, the courage and determination that these men showed just to survive the day to day part of the war. The horrors that these men shared needed to be buried until someone could put them into a context for the rest of us to truly understand and appreciate them. The author has done that in a vivid, yet compassionate manner. Everyone needs to read this book. Thank you, Mr. Towne for revealing this part of the war to the rest of us.

DOCTOR DANGER FORWARD
If you want to learn what it was really like fighting to save lives with the U.S. Medical Corps in World War II, give this newly released personal account by Allen N. Towne a try. Mr. Towne relates his five years'service as a frontline medic with the First Infantry Division in North Africa, Sicily, Omaha Beach, as well as France, Belgium, and Germany. He carries you along with him as a former college student who finds himself in the thick of some of the war's bloodiest battles. You will find it difficult not to read it straight through in one sitting.

Intriguing Personal Saga
I thought this book captured the essence of the tumult of three years of combat. I was spellbound by the way relationships developed and deepened. The author raised the question of why men respond so differently to the trauma of combat and war. A well-written story.

Twists and Turns
This book has more twists and turns than Allen's career! And it's as unpredictable, as well. I was glued to each chapter to find out what would happen next and stayed up late every night trying to finish it. It's full of suspense and a really good read! Nice job, Al!

A FUN BOOK TO READ
Coming from a person whose schedule finds it difficult to have sufficient "reading time", I could not put Doin' Jimmy down!! There are clever twists and turns to the story, as well as endearing characters that leave you thinking about each one of them throughout the day! Hope to read more books written by Allen Werneken!

Doin Jimmy
This is a great book! I couldn't put it down! It is a fun, witty, exciting, well-written journey through Hoffa's Detroit, the intrigue of the Detroit Mafia, a look at the posh suburb of Grosse Pointe and the beautiful northern Michigan area of Leelanau County. The characters and dialogue flow easily throughout, while the plot twists catch you off guard! The author has a wonderful sense of humor, as well. Fresh and unique! Highly recommended.

Don't Believe It for a Minute!: Forty Toxic Ideas That Are Driving You Crazy
Published in Paperback by Impact Publishers, Inc. (September, 1993)
Authors: Arnold A., Ph.D. Lazarus, Clifford N., Ph.D. Lazarus, and Allen Fay
Average review score:

Love it!
I own everything written by either Arnold Lazarus, Phd or Allen Fay, MD. Their best ...are the books they did together. This book is a gem. No shrink, patient or psychology student should be without it!

One Little Gem of a Book
The authors have distilled from thousands of therapy sessions some truly effective healthy philosophies. It's a quick read which delegitimizes some common irrationalities and gets to the heart of the self-help matter. A good extension of REBT and CBT ideas...addresses disturbance-causing beliefs head-on. You won't regret buying it. A welcome change from all the crappy psych books out there!

Finally the antidote for crazy thinking!
This book is terrific! It helped me realize that I was poisoning my happiness with my own thinking. More importantly, it gave me the remedies I needed for achieving a more balanced outlook and better mental health.

The Eastern Mysteries: An Encyclopedic Guide to the Sacred Languages & Magickal Systems of the World: The Key of It All, Book 1

What a value!!!
This book and it's "Western Mysteries" companion contain extensive amounts of interesting and valuable information. They truly bring together so many of the fundamental aspects that are shared across cultures and disciplines. Even though the books may appear, at first glance, somewhat complex, their many, many entry points provide easy access for both casual reading and deep exploration.

An Excellent Reference
This is a excellent reference for all students of Magick.
The volume abounds in tables and cross references for many Magickal Systems, the section on Hebrew, is an outstanding resource. With corrispondances from a number of major sources, including Golden Dawn, Aliester Crowley, and Eliphas Levi. with correlations between them.

If you want a reference to Magickal systems, Alphabets, and corrisponding number systems, this book is Great.

Author's review of The Eastern Mysteries
This book is the first volume of a two volume set that took me over 20 years to research and write. As a child I was drawn to the magic of the ancient alphabets. At nine years old, I had already committed to memory the Greek alphabet. I was able to write in my child's hand the Egyptian hieroglyphic phonetic alphabet. I also copied out from an encyclopedia the Phoenician alphabet, and saw the connections between Egyptian, Phonecian, Greek, and Roman script, and how our own English alphabet of 26 letters evolved from the picture images of these ancient scripts (i.e, A was a bull, and B was a house). In the late 1960s I discovered the number values for the ancient Hebrew alphabet. I was fascinated by the concept that every letter of the alphabet had a different number value, and that the range of numbers spanned from 1 to 9 to 10 to 900 to 100 to 900. This revelation somehow triggered deeply within me past life remembrances of previously studying the sacred nature of the alphabet. From my first exposure to Hebrew, I searched out other cultures and other languages that were isopsephic (i.e., languages that use the letters of the alphabet as number value in addition to phonetic values). What really fascinated me was that any word in an isopsephic language could be measured and numbered by the number values of the letters composing that word. And if two words equalled the same number, they served as poetic metaphors to define the mystical nature of that specific number. As my research progressed, more and more languages unfolded, until I discovered languages in both the east and west that held this mystical property. When I finally recorded all of my research, my occult archaeological discoveries fell naturally to two books, one dealing with the eastern mysteries and one with the western mysteries. The Eastern Mysteries contains so much new material that have never seen print before in English. This includes the numbering of Sanskrit, including a key to the letters on the flower petals known as the chakras. The Tibetan alphabet is also deciphered for the first time, as well as the stroke count of the Chinese language based on Taoist Spirit practices. A key to the actual layout of the I Ching is also deciphered for the first time, and connected back directly to the stroke count of Chinese calligraphy. Beyond these rare discoveries the middle eastern languages of Cuneiform, Hebrew, and Arabic are fully deciphered. There are also many appendices to the 6 chapters in this first volume that offer additional insight into the number philosophy of the ancient world, including the number system of Gurdjieff and the ancient eastern elemental system known as the tattvas. This work, though highly detailed, is aimed at the lay person, and does not require any previous knowledge of any of the alphabets or symbolic systems. I would recommend this book alone, on the merits of the last chapter. For I have written the best possible explanantion of the I Ching that has yet to see print. For in my research with the I Ching over the last 30 years, I had discovered the key to all of its symbolism. That key is the 8 basic trigrams that make up the 64 hexagrams. Once the reader understands these 8 basic shapes, then all of the complex oracular vocabulary can be understood. The Western Mysteries should also be purchased, since the two volumes complement each other, and were originally written as one large volume.
